- Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women worldwide, although men can develop breast cancer too.
- When breast cancer is found early and before it has spread, the 5-year survival rate is very high, often exceeding 99%.
- Mammograms can detect breast cancer years before a lump can be felt, which is why regular screenings are so important.
- Not all breast cancers cause pain. In fact, many early-stage breast cancers have no symptoms at all.
- Common warning signs can include:
- A new lump in the breast or underarm
- Changes in breast size or shape
- Skin dimpling or puckering
- Nipple discharge (other than breast milk)
- Redness, swelling, or thickening of the breast skin
- About 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.
- Early detection gives people more treatment options and often allows for less aggressive treatment.
- Knowing what is normal for your body can help you recognize changes and discuss them with your healthcare provider.
- Family history can increase risk, but most people diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease.
- Regular screenings, clinical exams, and being aware of any changes in your body are some of the best tools for finding breast cancer early.
“Early detection saves lives. A mammogram can find breast cancer before symptoms appear, making treatment more effective and improving outcomes. If you’re due for a screening, don’t put it off. Your future self will thank you.” 💗
